4 Sustainability Trends in the Hospitality Industry to Consider

Eco-consciousness is on the rise in the auto, fashion, and travel industries. It’s no surprise that the Hospitality industry is no exception to this green movement. 1. Offer More Eco-Friendly Amenities

High-quality amenities are a vital element guests consider when selecting a place to stay while away from home. The 2017 Green Lodging Trends Report was released in August 2017 and included survey responses gathered from nearly 2,100 hotels located in 46 countries. According to the report, expect hotel guests to demand amenities like:

• Electric vehicle (EV) charging stations
• Green/hypoallergenic products used in-room or for cleaning
• Non-toxic or no-VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints and building materials
• Health and wellness opportunities and perks

2. Introduce a Green Team

A green trend you can expect to see in 2018 within the Hospitality industry is the hotel’s addition of a “green team” to spearhead earth-friendly endeavors and manage dedicated budgets for green projects. Of the Hospitality professionals who responded to the 2017 Green Lodging Trends Report survey, 68% say they have a green team already in place. Another 14% indicated they planned to implement one in 2018. For smaller hotels, the green team may consist of just one individual.

3. Improve Energy Management

Also foreseen in the Hospitality industry is a significant emphasis placed on conserving and reducing energy use. This will include:

• Energy-efficient HVAC systems and maintenance routines
• Green roofs that feature solar panel systems and gardens

4. Increase Water Conservation

Anticipate a greater commitment to water efficiency within the Hospitality industry this year. Of the professionals who responded to the 2017 Green Lodging Trends survey:

• Approximately 57% of hotel owners said that at least 75% of their guestroom faucets featured low-flow aerators
